The Association for the Physically Disabled – Greater Johannesburg (established in 1934 as the Cripples’ Care Association ) is widely respected as a leader in the field of disability.

I want to thank you for a caring and professional organization, for making us realise that there are still amazing people in this world and I pray that all times God holds you all safely in the palm of his hand as without people like you it would be very hard for us to continue to run our lives. Thanking you. Kind regards. Pam Wallace

 (Daughter of a beneficiary.)

Our Credentials:

  • We’ve been doing this for a long time – thousands of people with disabilities have benefited from our home-care services since 1990.
  • Our Director has had vast experience in this field both locally and internationally.
  • Our activities carry the stamp of approval of both the Department of Social Development and the Department of Health.
  • All our well-groomed caregivers are professionally trained, experienced, attend regular refresher training sessions, are professionally supervised and undergo regular performance evaluations.
  • We always have a back-up plan in the event of something unforeseen happening to your assigned caregiver.
  • We address problems/complaints immediately.

Our Care-giving Credo: Service Excellence Respect  Sensitivity Empathy Devotion  Love Determination Companionship

Our Operating Hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Our Area of Operation: Greater Johannesburg and surrounds.

Our Clients: We provide short or long term services for persons with mobility impairments who are five years and older

  • Permanent Care: for as many hours and days as you require. During this time we can undertake duties pertaining to your general well-being and safety, personal hygiene and dressing, meal preparation and feeding, toileting, light domestic work, etc.
  • Temporary Relief: relief care for the permanent caregiver or relative who needs to take a holiday or plan a shopping trip.
  • Caregiver re-entering the job market: we can provide a caregiver to replace you in caring for a mobility impaired relative or friend while you are at work.

We Appreciate the Fact that You are Unique: When we look for a suitable caregiver for you we look beyond someone who will be able to assist with your physical condition; we consider your personality, culture and life style. We therefore conduct an interview with you and undertake an assessment of your environment, including your pets and plants. There is a nominal fee attached to this process. This fee is, however, credited to the client when he/she signs a contract with us.

We Listen and Work with You: Experience has taught us that the way in which we provide personal, physical care-services to clients must be based on the specific needs, guidance and instruction of the client.

We Provide Information: People who have recently become disabled and/or their loved ones might not fully understand the implications of the specific condition. We can provide you and/or you loved ones with information pertaining to your condition free of charge.

We Prepare for Emergency Situations: Your safety is of paramount importance to us, that is why we ensure that our caregivers are properly security screened and reference checked. We ensure that they have the right temperament to deal with a crisis, that they follow specific security rules while in your home and that they know what to do during a fire, criminal attack and medical emergency – including basic First Aid procedures. And when it comes to those smaller emergency situations; our caregivers know how to fit an electric plug and change a light bulb!

We Provide Financial Guidance: We know how critically important home-based care services are to people with disabilities. That is why we charge very affordable rates and work with you in developing a financially sustainable package based on your specific needs and budget constraints.

  • Should you qualify for any of the disability grants that are available, we will involve our Social Workers in securing such assistance for you.
  • Together we will explore the possibility of you being compensated via your medical aid society or insurance company.
  • If you are the victim of a vehicle accident, we will guide you regarding care-giving claims you can lodge with the Road Accident Fund.
  • We will provide you with valuable information concerning the tax benefits available to you from SARS.
  • We are not trying to get rich at your expense: all the income we generate through the Lean On Us Care Service is used by the APD to provide essential services to people with disabilities in previously disadvantaged communities.

We Provide Associated Services: In addition to our care-giving services we can assist you with:

  • Converted Quantum Transport Rental Service
  • Social Work counselling
  • Hiring of wheelchairs

We Appreciate the Importance of Companionship and Stimulation: Depending on your personal preferences, we could explore the following with you:

  • Being a social benefit organisation, we have volunteers who could pay you a social visit at times when our caregiver is not in attendance.
  • Depending on the availability of other people with disabilities in your area, we could explore the possibility of setting up either a social networking club or an arts and crafts skills group.
  • Depending on your skills set, we could explore the possibility of you becoming a volunteer of our organisation.

We Are Just a Phone Call Away: For more information about our services and assistance in formulating a tailor-made care-giving package for you, please contact Rachel Legasa on 011-646-8331 or
