International Day for Persons with Disabilities
INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
The United Nations proclaimed the 3rd of December as an International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) and the theme for 2014 is Sustainable Development: The Promise of Technology. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights andwell-being of persons with disabilities.
To commemorate the IDPD, APD in partnership with other organisations rendering services to people with disabilities, conducted a clean-up disability awareness event in Alexandra Township. Under the theme “Yes we can, Yes we care”, the clean-up exercise was organised by APD and Alexandra Disability Centre, to create an opportunity for people with disabilities in Alexandra to participate in promoting community hygiene.
The event focussed on raising awareness that people with disabilities care about their communities and they can participate in the promotion of cleanliness in the location. The exercise was wellattended by people with disabilities and staff from APD, ADC and Sithandiwe Disability Centre who cleaned designated streets in Alexandra before convening at San Kopano Hall. The APD Chairperson Mr. Patrick Mabunda addressed the crowd and distributed wheelchairs to a number of beneficiaries.
The event was made possible through funding support from the Department of Social Development and logistical support from the City of Johannesburg.
Our deepest appreciation also goes to the following companies for their support of the event:
