Rolling Rehab

Curamus Association and Rolling Rehab would like to invite any person with a disability or anyone working with people with disabilities to attend the “Disability Drive and Thrive” Interactive Exhibition.  Through this exhibition, we would like to create an opportunity for social interaction and knowledge sharing between people who are newly disabled and learning how to live with a disability and those who are experienced in this lifestyle and have worked out solutions to live a full and active life.  The day will provide opportunities for social interaction, test driving of a variety of different types of vehicles, practical demonstrations as well as an exhibition of products and services that are currently available for people with disabilities, mainly focussing on driving and mobility.

Rationale: Many people living with physical disabilities are socially isolated and dependent on family and friends for transport. This is largely due to a lack of public transport but also be due to financial reasons, emotional reasons, or through a lack of knowledge and awareness of what vehicles and adaptations are available which will enable them to drive and thus to become independent. The “Disability Drive and Thrive” Interactive Exhibition endeavours to create an opportunity for social interaction and knowledge sharing between people who are newly disabled and learning how to live with a disability and those who are experienced in this lifestyle and have worked out solutions to live a full and active life. The day will provide opportunities for social interaction, test driving, practical demonstrations as well as an exhibition of products and services that are currently available for people with disabilities, mainly focusing on driving and mobility. – Rolling Rehab

Being an able-bodied person and never having being exposed to the plight of the physically disabled, I was/am astonished at the simple small things in life that the “amakrokko” (said in jest and respect) are thankful for. We (able-bodies) take so many things for granted and dont realise how much we have to be thankful for !! Being exposed in 2013 to 3 x wheelchair restricted people (one of whom I am in a relationship with) I have come to realise how much need there is out there for the smaller enjoyable things for the amakrokko. From being just mobile (a wheelchair), to accessibility (ramps etc), to communication (computers/cell-phones) and just getting out (day trips etc.). This expo will probably see me with my mouth gaping wide open & marvelling at all the items on exhibition.

I sincerely hope this expo lives up to its expectations and that it becomes, not only a regular institution, but a ever-growing success story throughout South Africa (yes, by that I mean expanding to ALL metro cities) .

I cant wait to be there at this expo ! Keep up the good work Organisers !

I had a fabulous time at the exhibition and learnt so much. It was so well organised and well attended. Congratulations to the organisers and thank you for this event. I even subscribed to the magazine and cannot wait for my March/April issue.

I am physically disabled & a mom of 3 teenagers. It is a daily struggle with transport to and from work. I have advertised on the web for lift clubs, but to no avail. Maybe somebody in the APD can assist me. I have a learner’s licence, but can’t find anyone apart from Driving Ambitions to give me some lessons in order for me to get my licence. Driving Ambitions is in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, while I am situated in the Southern suburbs. If anyone can assist me, please contact me on roby...@gmail.com.

Hi Bridgitte. We don’t know of a specific Driving School in the South that can assist but what we can do is give you a link to have a look at all the driving schools listed in JHB. If it helps then please let us have the details so we can publish it on our website. The link is http://www.idrive.co.za/driving-schools/gauteng/J. However we strongly recommend that you make use of an accredited Driving School like Driving Ambitions who understand the special needs of the driver with a disability.
