Against
Prejudice and Discrimination
Button Campaign

Joint
APD (Association for the Physically Disabled) and BB (Barrier
Breakers) Campaign
Launch: Human Rights
Day - 21 March 2008
Campaign Vision:
There are millions of South Africans opposed to discrimination.
Yet it is the thousands over-playing isolated incidents
involving only a few individuals who get all the media
attention and so distort perceptions around racial tension
in South Africa, not only in our country, but globally.
It is for this reason that the APD and BB are launching
the Against Prejudice & Discrimination Button Campaign
which it hopes will provide the unheard majority with
a voice and enable them to participate in a peaceful,
silent protest against any form of discrimination.
Campaign Modus Operandi:
1. Obtain in principle support from the South African
Human Rights Commission.
Simmi Pillay, Human Rights and Disability Coordinator
at the South African Human Rights Commission, acknowledges
the good work that the APD and BB Button Campaign initiative
can potentially produce.
2. Obtain the sponsorship/support of the media eg 702
3. Obtain the sponsorship/support of large organisations.
4. Distribute buttons and boards displaying the message:

Please Note:
The Radio 702 Logo has been used as an example only and
in no way (as yet) reflects their endorsement.
Slogan: Every Day Is An APD Day But Every Friday MUST
Be An APD Day
The distribution of buttons is envisaged to take place
at consenting organisations/corporations. The buttons
would be supplied to/bought by employees at only R10 each.
Buttons are to be worn every Friday.
The participating organisation/corporation will have
the opportunity to purchase an A3 or A2 size “Stop
Sign” (see poster design above) to display in the
foyer or reception area to show its support for the message
of the Button Campaign.
Price of boards: A3 R22 and A2 R45.
All monies raised during this campaign will be in aid
of people with disabilities and will be administered by
the APD, an organisation which has first hand knowledge
of the discrimination people with disabilities have been
experiencing over the last seven decades. (Please visit
www.apd.org.za for more information.)
5. It is envisaged that the Button Campaign carry the
logo of the sponsoring organisation/corporation. The Marketing
Budget of these organisations would, hopefully, contribute
to the branding and public relations exercise.
6. The Human Resource Management of an organisation could
be involved in ascertaining how many employees would participate
in this silent protest.
We hope that you will see the merits of this project
and would welcome the opportunity to discuss it with you
in greater detail.
